Linoleum/Woodcut printmaking has been my medium of exploration and expression for the last 15 years. Some of my first prints were of trees. I like going bike riding around my neighborhood, and I kept looking at what I call “city trees”. These are the trees that live between the street and someone’s lawn. They are usually large and old, their planting day long forgotten. They’d often been casually lopped and topped, they grew and lived untended, hardly even noticed . Yet they stand, beautiful in their endurance; gifting shade, providing homes and perches for many passing birds and squirrels. I made a series of linoleum prints to honor these city trees. Many of those first trees are gone now, most of them victims of construction and growth of another sort.
I continue to look at trees. They are so creative in the way they grow. They often seem to be having conversations too - gossiping, sharing news, sometimes just quietly enjoying each others’ company. I try and sneak some of their secrets into my work.
